Kids and Snoring

Sporadic snoring may be quite normal for youngsters and recent research shows that three to twelve percent of youngsters between the age of 1 and 9 snore but how often doesn't mean normality. Recurring snoring can cause a more concerning illness called Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome, shortened to "OSAS", and more commonly known simply as sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a condition qualified by loud snoring with periods of breathing disruptions. Throughout the period when breathing is broken, usually between five to thirty seconds, the child won't be able to get to back to sleep and will fidget continually into other sleeping positions and then in the end go back to sleep. Eventually, after a short time period, the child will start snoring once again. Although this situation rarely appears on kids, it is important that parents should look out for signs that come along with it.

Poor speech habits can indicate a condition called sleep apnea, and now and again the speech traits can be so bad that it sounds like an individual is speaking with a mouth of hot food. If a boy or girl has sleep apnea their breathing will use more energy while they rest. They often tend to eat their food slowly because of the difficulty of breathing and chewing at the same time and this oftentimes causes a deficiency of nutrients required to support healthy development. When children don't get enough sleep, they can grow inattentive and can appear hyper and frantic in their conduct. You might discover that if your boy or girl is snoring, it could be affecting their mental attitude throughout the day, and that they may be weary and sluggish. A lack of focus and additional signs might be that they are not acquiring a healthy nights rest which could be induced by snoring.

If these symptoms are seen, it is fundamental for parents to have their boy or girl looked at by a pediatrician. A youngster might seem happy and all smiles in the doctor's office making it difficult to diagnose sleep apnea correctly. Parents are advised to record their child's snoring so that the doctor can analyze the situation.

Meantime, sleep apnea is not the single reason why children snore, other reasons include allergic attack, obesity, asthma, and enlargement of adenoids and/or tonsils caused by cold or tonsillitis. Some allergic reactions can cause puffiness on the linings of the nose that can force the enlargement of adenoids and this prevents the boy or girl from breathing normally. The theory behind this is that a boy or girl will snore prior to an allergic or asthma attack owing to the narrowed airway. It has been shown that after an allergic reaction or asthma attack the snoring will stop. In fact, 20 to 40 percent of overweight children snore - so, obesity can also lead to snoring. This is because fats can shape around the throat that can cause tightness and make the limited airways, plus fats in the stomach, cause the diaphragm to work irregularly.

Recent research is establishing that snoring and asthma may go together, especially in youngsters. Sometimes it could be a more easy reason, such as inflamed or enlarged tonsils or adenoids. This could be the result of a cold or an infection in which the snoring will be diminished or go away completely when the individual is healthy again. A cold or tonsillitis can be addressed using decongestants and antibiotic drugs, while adenoid enlargement is addressed primarily through surgery to remove the adenoids and tonsils.
